Local Team Wins Major Automotive Project on Humberside
Clugston Construction are delighted to announce the award of a new contract to build a new multi million pound vehicle storage and distribution centre on the South Bank of the Humber for Able Group.
The 6000m2 facility is being delivered by Clugston under a design and build contract with Howarth Litchfield, who secured the appointment as architect and principal designer because of the firm’s experience in the automotive, commercial and industrial sectors. The project is due to start on site on 6th March and is scheduled to last 30 weeks.
The PDI unit (pre-inspection/pre-delivery), which will be used by BMW UK Limited, will see several thousand vehicles passing through each year to be prepared, cleaned and inspected before transportation to retailers throughout the country.
The building which involves a slab foundation, portal frame steel structure and external cladding will also involve construction of a new reception area at ground floor and offices and support accommodation on a mezzanine floor. M&E systems will be installed to supply services throughout the building which will necessitate the design and build team working closely with the Able Group’s nominated suppliers to accommodate the specialist vehicle washing and preparation equipment.
Commenting on the project, Clugston’s managing director Steve Radcliffe said “due to the project’s proximity to our Head Office in Scunthorpe and our 80-year association with the region, Clugston Construction will endeavour to use its established local supply chain wherever possible.”
He also added: - “We are looking forward to working with Able and Howarth Litchfield and through collaboration and teamwork we will seek to minimise the impact of our construction activities on the ongoing site operations.”
Neil Etherington, business development director of the Able Group, added: “This current project for BMW is one of a number of major works we anticipate in the near future and we have selected a capable, experienced team to undertake it. We are fully confident that the PDI will be completed and delivered on time and within budget.
“Able Humber Port, by any measure, is a major development of strategic significance. It has been earmarked by government as a key location for the marine renewable energy sector and is the biggest part of the UK’s largest Enterprise Zone. The contract with BMW is an important element in continuing progress and we are delighted to be working with such a strong and committed team of professionals.”
