Clugston scoops three major Health and Safety Awards
Clugston Construction’s dedication to improving Health and Safety in the workplace has been recognised through three award schemes:
- Health & Safety Award - Committed to Construction in Humber and West Yorkshire 201
- Order of Distinction - RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2015
- International Safety Award with Merit - British Safety Council
Clugston Construction has won the Health and Safety Award at the “Committed to Construction in Humber and West Yorkshire Awards 2015” which celebrate the best practice, achievement and innovation that are at the heart of the region’s construction community.
Although Clugston’s Safety performance record has been recognised as one of the best in the Construction Industry, the company has been determined to further enhance and strengthen its Health performance. Last year Clugston launched its “Building a Healthier Future” campaign, introducing a range of practical measures to promote and maintain a fitter and more healthy workforce, both within the company and with its supply chain partners.
The award recognises both the practical benefits and the success of the awareness campaign that Clugston has promoted in support of this - particularly their 5-A-Day initiative which has concentrated on five major construction related health issues:
- hand arm vibration
The judges were extremely impressed by the innovative approach taken to get the message about the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace across, and the creativity of the 5-A-Day approach to this subject shone out to them.
Collecting the award are (from left) Mark Atkinson - Health and Safety Manager; Hilary Bird - Leeds Regional Office; Neil Webster - Works Manager, Leeds RERF.
The award, sponsored by LSS Waste, was collected by Clugston’s Health and Safety Manager, Mark Atkinson at the prestigious CCIHWY 15 Dinner held on Friday 17 April at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. Mark said “I am very pleased to accept this award in recognition of the enthusiasm and practical approach that all our site staff and suppliers have shown in implementing the “Building a Healthier Future” initiatives. Our campaign is just the beginning. Our hope is that the positive benefits will be measured for many years in the future."
Clugston Construction was among the winners in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2015. The Order of Distinction (17 consecutive Golds) award in the prestigious annual scheme run by the RoSPA will be presented during a ceremony at the National Exhibition Centre, on July 14, 2015.
The RoSPA Awards, dating back 59 years, recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work. Judges consider entrants’ occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Clugston Construction, contribute to raising standards overall and we congratulate them.”
British Safety Council
Clugston Construction won an International Safety Award with merit from the British Safety Council in recognition of its commitment to keeping its workers and workplaces healthy and safe during 2014.
The International Safety Awards celebrate and promote the success of the winning organisations and their employees in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all. The 2015 award winners all demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme's independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health.
Neal Stone, acting Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated Clugston on its success. "On behalf of the Trustees and staff of the British Safety Council we warmly congratulate Clugston Construction and its employees on gaining an International Safety Award with merit for 2015. All of those working at Clugston have made this award possible, which recognises their commitment to preventing injury and ill health in the workplace."
